Cosima had been aghast at Daniela’s appearance. For a long time her eldest daughter had been suffering from insomnia, exhaustion and the nervous spasms to which we have already referred. In order for her to build up her reserves, Cosima recommended a very particular regime:

Cocoa in the morning, at around eleven some raw ham & a glass of your wonderful Hochheimer, then your very nice lunch, but without black coffee afterwards, then, before you go out, in God’s name, a glass of Schön’s milk (though I’d prefer an egg), in the evening your supper, at nine a glass of beer, but no tea.85
